Drive-by pellet gun shootings targeted at least four LGBTQ+ hot spots in Hillcrest over the weekend, injuring employees and sparking fear in the community. San Diego police confirmed that the establishments hit by the attacks included The Rail bar, Rich’s nightclub, Number 1 Fifth Ave, and Pec’s.

Surveillance video provided by two of the targeted businesses, The Rail and Rich’s, captured the terrifying moments when employees were struck by pellets fired from a passing vehicle. The owner of The Rail, Isaac Vargas, described how their security guard was shot in the arm, prompting immediate action to protect staff and patrons.

At Rich’s nightclub, several staff members, including Eddie Reynoso, were hit by projectiles, with Reynoso narrowly avoiding a serious eye injury. He recounted the harrowing experience of seeing the gun pointed out of the car window before hearing the shots ring out.

San Diego police are actively investigating the incidents and have not yet determined a motive for the shootings. Despite the businesses being known as LGBTQ+ friendly establishments, authorities have not confirmed whether the attacks were specifically targeting LGBTQ+ businesses.

Reynoso, grateful that his vision was not permanently damaged, urged the perpetrators to consider the consequences of their actions. He emphasized the potential for serious harm and urged anyone with information to come forward to assist in the investigation.

The community in Hillcrest is on edge following the attacks, with concerns about safety and the need for increased security measures at LGBTQ+ establishments. San Diego Police have urged anyone with information to contact their non-emergency line as they work to identify and apprehend those responsible for the shootings.
