Leaders from the US, Japan, and the Philippines convened at the White House to address escalating tensions in the South China Sea caused by China’s aggressive actions. This historic trilateral meeting marked a significant step in strengthening cooperation among the three nations.

Recent clashes between the Philippines and China in the Second Thomas Shoal have raised concerns, with Filipino troops stationed in the area since 1999 to defend their territory. President Biden reiterated the US’s commitment to supporting the Philippines in the face of Chinese aggression, citing a mutual defense treaty from the 1950s.

China’s expansive claims in the South China Sea, including areas within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone, have been disputed internationally. A 2016 ruling by the Permanent Court of Arbitration rejected China’s claims as lacking a legal basis.

In response to the escalating tensions, the US announced plans for joint patrols with the Coast Guard in the Indo-Pacific region and humanitarian assistance to the Philippines. Additionally, joint patrols involving the US, Australia, the Philippines, and Japan are expected in the South China Sea.

Furthermore, US senators introduced a bill to provide $2.5 billion in defense assistance to the Philippines to counter Chinese pressure, demonstrating strong support from allies. The leaders also discussed broader regional challenges and economic development, with new investments planned in sectors like undersea cables, logistics, clean energy, and telecommunications.

Biden’s Partnership for global infrastructure and investment will back a new Luzon corridor project in the Philippines, focusing on infrastructure development such as ports, rail, clean energy, and semiconductor supply chains. The meeting highlighted the importance of regional cooperation in addressing security threats and promoting economic growth in the Indo-Pacific region.
