Hollywood Stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney Celebrate Wrexham’s Promotion to League One
Wrexham’s co-owners, Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, are on cloud nine after their club secured a place in the third tier of English football with a resounding 6-0 victory over Forest Green on Saturday. This victory marks Wrexham’s second consecutive promotion, following their return to the English Football League after a 15-year absence in April 2023.
Reynolds, known for his role in Deadpool, expressed his joy on social media, stating, “A few years ago, if you told me I would be crying tears of joy over a football match taking place in north Wales, you would be Rob McElhenney.” McElhenney, on the other hand, was left speechless by the achievement.
Since acquiring Wrexham in 2021, the duo’s investment has not only propelled the team back into the English Football League but has also brought global recognition to the club through a Disney television documentary series. Their growing fame in the United States even allowed Wrexham to embark on a pre-season tour of North America, playing against the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United.
Despite financial challenges, with Wrexham owing the co-owners £9 million ($11 million) after a £5 million loss last year, the team’s success on the pitch has been undeniable. Elliot Lee, Paul Mullin, Ryan Inniss, Ryan Barnett, and Jack Marriott were all on target in the memorable victory over Forest Green, securing Wrexham’s place in League One next season.
The scenes of jubilant fans storming the pitch at Wrexham’s Racecourse Ground after the final whistle only added to the celebration of this historic achievement for the club.
