Entrepreneur Luan Yi made the bold decision to leave the bustling tech hub of Shenzhen in China for the vibrant city of Hong Kong. His motivation? The territory’s more open market and relaxed rules on internet access, which allow him to freely promote his work on platforms like YouTube.

Luan is just one of the many mainland Chinese professionals who have secured visas to live and work in Hong Kong, seeking to take advantage of the city’s unique opportunities and lifestyle. Since the beginning of 2023, over 93,600 people from mainland China have been granted visas by Hong Kong authorities, with many more expected to follow suit.

City leader John Lee emphasized the appeal of Hong Kong as a place where global and Chinese advantages converge, offering not only world-class work opportunities but also a fulfilling life. The city has seen a significant increase in visa applications from mainland Chinese applicants, with schemes like the “top talent” program attracting thousands of professionals seeking higher salaries, lower taxes, and greater freedom.

While some, like banker Grace, remain cautious due to Hong Kong’s weak markets and recent job cuts, others like Luan see the city’s potential for growth and success. Luan, who plans to raise his child in Hong Kong, believes in the city’s internationalized education system and hopes to establish his company there for the long run.

As Hong Kong continues to attract talent from mainland China and beyond, the city’s unique blend of opportunities and lifestyle remains a magnet for ambitious professionals looking to thrive in a dynamic environment.
