Reporters Without Borders representative deported from Hong Kong

A representative for Reporters Without Borders (RSF) was denied entry to Hong Kong, sparking outrage from the international freedom of information advocacy nonprofit. The representative, Advocacy Officer Aleksandra Bielakowska, was deported after being detained at the city’s international airport for six hours, during which she was questioned and her belongings were searched multiple times.

Bielakowska had arrived in Hong Kong as part of an RSF mission to meet journalists and monitor a hearing in the trial of media tycoon Jimmy Lai, who was arrested in 2020 under the National Security Law. Lai, a former pro-democracy publisher, faces charges of colluding with foreign powers to undermine China’s national security.

RSF’s director of campaigns, Rebecca Vincent, expressed shock at the treatment of their colleague, calling for an immediate explanation from Hong Kong authorities. She emphasized the importance of monitoring Lai’s trial to ensure transparency and accountability in the legal proceedings.

The deportation of the RSF representative is seen as a further decline in press freedom in Hong Kong, which has faced international criticism for its crackdown on independent media outlets. The territory has plummeted in press freedom rankings in recent years, with several media outlets forced to shut down due to government pressure.

The case of Jimmy Lai and the treatment of RSF’s representative highlight the erosion of press freedom and the rule of law in Hong Kong, raising concerns about the future of free speech in the region. International condemnation of the charges against Lai and calls for his release continue to mount, as Hong Kong grapples with increasing restrictions on media freedom.
