Hong Kong’s Vriko Kwok defies odds to complete ultra-marathon challenge

Vriko Kwok, a 32-year-old from Hong Kong, was the only athlete with no prior running experience when she took on the challenge of participating in Further, an ultra-marathon event organized by sportswear brand Lululemon. Despite facing bullying in the past, Kwok decided to take a leap of faith and push herself beyond her limits.

The six-day event, held in Lake Cahuilla, California, saw Kwok and nine other female athletes from around the world run their farthest distance. Kwok, who initially struggled with running, managed to cover an impressive 303.313 kilometers in less than a year of training.

Supported by a team of coaches, sports scientists, and nutritionists, Kwok underwent a rigorous training program that included running, aerial yoga, and strength training. Despite facing challenges such as a pre-existing knee problem and unexpected periods during the event, Kwok persevered and completed the challenge without any injuries.

Kwok’s journey from zero to ultra-runner serves as an inspiration for inclusivity and representation in the world of sports. She hopes to encourage others to step out of their comfort zones and explore their full potential. With her sights set on the Chicago Marathon in October, Kwok continues to push boundaries and defy expectations.
