The House of Commons in Canada has passed a private member’s motion titled “Political Interference, Violence or Intimidation on Canadian Soil” which includes a reference to an Indian link to the killing of pro-Khalistan figure Hardeep Singh Nijjar on June 18 last year. The motion was moved by Indo-Canadian MP Sukh Dhaliwal and was seconded by several MPs, including eight Indo-Canadians.

The motion, which received 326 votes in favor and none against, aims to address rising forms of intimidation, threats, and interference from countries such as India, China, Russia, Iran, and others. It specifically mentions the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was considered a terrorist in India and was associated with the secessionist group Sikhs for Justice (SFJ).

The passing of this motion has sparked controversy, with the Canada India Foundation (CIF) opposing it, citing concerns about the potential damage it could cause to the Canada-India relationship. However, supporters of the motion, including Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and leader of the opposition Conservative Party Pierre Poilievre, believe it is necessary to hold accountable any person or agents of a foreign state undermining democratic institutions or engaging in acts of violence on Canadian soil.
