House Republicans submit articles of impeachment against Mayorkas to Senate

Republicans in the House of Representatives have sent articles of impeachment for Joe Biden’s director of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, to the Senate, marking the beginning of the end for the impeachment effort. The articles were delivered by a small procession led by impeachment managers, including Marjorie Taylor Greene.

The impeachment effort, which accuses Mayorkas of wilfully disregarding the law and abusing the public trust, is not expected to result in a conviction in the Senate. Democrats have dismissed the effort as a political stunt, noting the lack of specific “high crimes” outlined in the articles.

Despite the impeachment being seen as a long shot, it has brought attention to the issue of border security in Washington. With reports of over 130,000 illegal crossings at the border in March, President Biden and some allies in Congress are considering executive action to address the issue.

A bipartisan working group in the Senate had proposed legislation to address border security, including giving Biden authority to temporarily freeze the US asylum program. However, the deal fell apart after House Republicans, influenced by former President Donald Trump, declared it “dead on arrival.”

While the impeachment of Mayorkas may ultimately fail, it has highlighted the ongoing debate over border security and the challenges facing the Biden administration in addressing the issue. As the Senate prepares to consider the articles of impeachment, the political drama surrounding the DHS chief continues to unfold.
