Houston makes a big leap on annual ranking of top places to live in 2024

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Houston has reason to celebrate as it has made a significant leap in the rankings of the “Best Places to Live” list for 2024-2025 by U.S. News and World Report. After a disappointing No. 140 placement last year, the city has climbed to a much-improved No. 97, showcasing the strides it has made in terms of livability.

The report evaluates cities based on four key indexes: quality of life, value, desirability, and job market. This year, the methodology was updated to focus on city-based data and place more emphasis on a city’s value and job market. This shift in focus has benefited not only Houston but also nine other Texas cities, including Austin, which jumped an impressive 31 spots to claim the No. 9 spot nationally.

In addition to its improved ranking nationally, Houston also moved up to No. 8 on the Best Place to Live in Texas list for 2024, further solidifying its appeal as a desirable place to call home. The city’s diversity, top-notch schools, and vibrant city life make it an attractive destination for a wide range of residents, including retirees looking for a mix of urban amenities and quality of life.

While Houston’s rise in the rankings is certainly cause for celebration, other Texas cities also saw improvements, with Austin leading the pack as the lone Texas city in the top 10 nationally. The state’s diverse offerings, from bustling urban centers to scenic coastal towns, continue to draw residents seeking a high quality of life and strong job market opportunities.

Overall, the latest rankings highlight the diverse and dynamic offerings of Texas cities, showcasing the Lone Star State as a top destination for those looking for a great place to live.
