As temperatures soar and humidity levels rise, asthma patients may find themselves struggling to breathe. The combination of heat and humidity can exacerbate asthma symptoms by increasing air pollutants and allergens in the air, such as pollen, mold spores, and dust mites.
Dr. Pujan Parikh, a consultant pulmonary medicine and sleep medicine expert at HN Reliance Hospital, explains, “Asthma attacks can be triggered by inflammation and constriction as heat and humidity can block the airways. Heat and humidity increase air pollutants, which can worsen asthma symptoms.”
High humidity levels can also encourage the growth of dust mites and mold, further aggravating asthma symptoms. The thick mucus production caused by dehydration in high temperatures can obstruct airflow and make breathing more difficult for asthma patients.
Moreover, some individuals may experience heat-related asthma, where exposure to hot and humid conditions directly triggers asthma symptoms. This can occur due to thermal stress on the airways or the inhalation of warm, moist air containing irritants or allergens.
Rapid changes in temperature and humidity levels during hot and humid weather can lead to sudden asthma attacks in susceptible individuals. It is crucial for asthma patients to take proactive measures to manage their condition during periods of heat and humidity, such as staying indoors during peak heat hours, using air conditioning, and avoiding exposure to allergens and pollutants. By taking precautions and staying informed, asthma patients can better navigate the challenges posed by hot and humid weather.
