How to Stay Positive When Surrounded by Negativity

Prince Bhojwani’s Journey to Optimism and Better Health

Prince Bhojwani, a former start-up founder from New York City, never considered himself a negative person until a series of health scares forced him to reevaluate his outlook on life. In May 2018, Bhojwani experienced debilitating symptoms such as blurry vision and spiking blood pressure, leading to three hospital visits in one month. Doctors initially suspected a stroke but couldn’t pinpoint the exact cause of his illness.

It was a close friend, described as one of the most optimistic people he knew, who pointed out Bhojwani’s lack of faith in positive outcomes. This realization prompted Bhojwani to make significant changes in his life. He began practicing daily meditation, expressing gratitude for being alive, and co-founded a nonprofit organization called Asana Voices, focusing on South Asian advocacy.

Since adopting a more positive outlook, Bhojwani has not experienced any similar health crises, despite working longer hours. He attributes his improved health to his newfound optimism, stating, “After there was a life-changing event, it kind of forced me to become optimistic. I can’t even imagine living life the way I did back then.”

Research supports the connection between optimism and good health outcomes. Studies have shown that optimists tend to live longer, maintain better physical functioning as they age, and have healthier habits overall. While some individuals may be naturally more optimistic, optimism can also be learned through training and practice.

Clinical experts like Sue Varma emphasize the importance of reframing negative thoughts, envisioning positive outcomes, and finding a sense of purpose to cultivate optimism. Engaging in activities that align with one’s interests, mastering new skills, and practicing gratitude can all contribute to a more positive mindset.

While changing one’s mindset is not easy, Varma stresses the importance of consistent practice. “It’s a toolset, it’s a mindset,” she said. “I have to practice it every day in my mind.” By adopting a more optimistic outlook, individuals like Prince Bhojwani can not only improve their health but also enhance their overall well-being and quality of life.
