HP considered as potential purchaser for struggling Humane AI Pin company

After a tumultuous start and scathing reviews, AI startup Humane is reportedly on the hunt for a buyer for its wearable AI Pin, with tech giant HP emerging as a potential contender.

According to The New York Times, Humane, founded by former Apple executives Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno, is in discussions with HP for a possible acquisition deal exceeding $1 billion. This comes after reports from Bloomberg and The New York Times indicated that the struggling company is looking to sell for between $750 million and $1 billion.

The AI Pin, a $699 wearable device that utilizes a laser projection system to provide AI-powered features, has faced harsh criticism from reviewers since its launch. Critics have pointed out issues with battery life, functionality, and overheating, leading to a wave of negative feedback. Additionally, the company came under fire for warning customers about potential fire hazards related to the device’s charging case.

In a further blow to the company’s reputation, The Times revealed that a senior software engineer was dismissed in February for expressing doubts about the AI Pin’s readiness for release, allegedly violating a company policy against negative comments. Former and current employees have spoken out about a company culture that discouraged criticism, with Chaudhri and Bongiorno allegedly ignoring concerns about the device’s technical shortcomings.

Despite setting a goal of selling 100,000 units in its first year, Humane had only managed to secure around 10,000 orders for the AI Pin by early April. The potential acquisition by HP, known for acquiring Palm and subsequently discontinuing the brand, raises uncertainties about the future of Humane’s technology and workforce. Whether HP will integrate or abandon the AI Pin remains to be seen, leaving the fate of Humane hanging in the balance.
