Hyderabad Man Sentenced to 16 Years in UK Prison for Attempted Murder of Ex-Girlfriend

A 25-year-old man from Hyderabad, India, has been sentenced to 16 years in prison in London, UK, for attempting to kill his ex-girlfriend in a horrific attack at a biryani restaurant in East Ham. Sriram Ambarla pleaded guilty to the charges and received an additional 12-month sentence for unlawfully possessing a knife in a public place.

The court heard that Mr Ambarla brutally attacked his ex-girlfriend, a Malayali student, by slashing her throat and stabbing her nine times, leaving her critically injured for almost a month. The victim and the perpetrator had met while studying engineering in India in 2016, but their relationship turned abusive, leading to their split in 2019.

Mr Ambarla resorted to physical violence and threats of self-harm to control the victim, repeatedly showing up at her house unexpectedly and attempting to blackmail her into marriage. Despite many rejections, he finally went to the restaurant where she worked in East London, threatening to kill her if she did not agree to marry him.

The court revealed that Mr Ambarla had searched online about killing someone with a knife before launching the frenzied attack on his ex-girlfriend. Described as “jealous, possessive, and determined” by the judge, he was given a lifetime restraining order from ever contacting the woman again.

The shocking case highlights the dangers of abusive relationships and the importance of seeking help and support in such situations.
