IAE 2024 Conference to Explore Strategies for Securing the Future of Africa’s Gas and LNG Industries

Africa’s Gas Resources Poised to Drive Energy Transition and Economic Growth

Africa’s abundant gas resources, representing 13% of global reserves, are set to play a crucial role in fulfilling the continent’s electrification objectives and accelerating the energy transition. With the continent currently exporting over 40 million tonnes of LNG per year and additional capacity coming online, the opportunities for investment and growth in the gas sector are vast.

At the upcoming Invest in African Energy (IAE) forum in Paris in May 2024, a dedicated panel will delve into Africa’s deepwater gas, LNG, and FLNG investment opportunities. Global investors are increasingly turning to natural gas as a less carbon-intensive solution that can deliver reliable energy at scale.

The panel, under the theme “Future Proofing Africa’s Gas and LNG Industry,” will explore Africa’s high long-term gas demand growth, as well as opportunities for developing, supplying, and servicing gas projects. With panelists including industry experts from Energy Intelligence, Rystad Energy, Perenco, and NOV, the discussions are expected to shed light on key investment trends shaping the global gas market.

Despite the continent’s $800-billion, 20-year upstream capital expenditure program in the gas sector, African gas projects still face challenges in attracting investment. The panel will address strategies for governments and regulators to support gas development and stimulate investment through gas-specific legislation.

Technology will also be a key focus, with discussions on enhancing the efficiency, safety, and sustainability of LNG operations across Africa. From small-scale LNG for off-grid users to innovative FLNG vessels, the continent is at the forefront of technological advancements in the sector.

With LNG positioned as a key enabler of the energy transition, the forum aims to bring together technology and service providers to advance the discourse around decarbonization, energy efficiency, and environmental stewardship in Africa’s gas industry.
