IAEA Chief Rafael Grossi to Visit Iran Amid Growing Concerns Over Nuclear Activity
UN atomic watchdog chief Rafael Grossi is scheduled to arrive in Iran on Monday for a conference and talks with officials regarding Tehran’s nuclear program. The visit comes at a time of heightened regional tensions, with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) criticizing Iran for lack of cooperation on inspections and other outstanding issues.
Grossi, head of the IAEA, is expected to address Iran’s first International Conference on Nuclear Science and Technology, taking place in Isfahan province, home to the Natanz uranium enrichment plant. The province was recently targeted in strikes attributed to Israel, with no reported damage to nuclear facilities.
During his visit, Grossi will meet with Iranian officials, including nuclear chief Mohammad Eslami. Eslami expressed confidence that the negotiations will help clarify ambiguities and strengthen relations with the agency.
Iran has suspended compliance with caps on nuclear activities set by the 2015 nuclear deal after the US withdrew from the agreement and reimposed sanctions. Tensions between Iran and the IAEA have escalated since the deal fell apart, with efforts to restore compliance unsuccessful.
Despite Iran’s denial of nuclear weapon ambitions, the IAEA reported an increase in enriched uranium stockpiles exceeding the 2015 accord limit. Grossi’s visit provides an opportunity for both sides to address concerns, particularly regarding the IAEA’s inspectors.
Overall, Grossi’s visit to Iran is crucial in addressing the escalating tensions surrounding Tehran’s nuclear activities and the need for cooperation with international agencies.
