The International Criminal Court’s prosecutor has made a bold move by requesting arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, his defence chief, and three Hamas leaders over alleged war crimes. The prosecutor, Karim Khan, stated that he had reasonable grounds to believe that the five men bear criminal responsibility for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity.
The arrest warrants were requested after over seven months of war in Gaza, with the prosecutor specifically targeting Netanyahu and Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant for overseeing Israel’s offensive against Hamas. Additionally, arrest warrants were also sought for Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar, Mohammed Al-Masri, and Ismail Haniyeh.
While a panel of pre-trial judges will determine whether the evidence supports the issuing of arrest warrants, the court lacks the means to enforce such warrants.
