IDF Continues ‘Precise Operation’ in Rafah as Thousands More Urged to Evacuate

The Israeli military has issued more evacuation orders for tens of thousands of Palestinians, urging them to head to an ‘expanded humanitarian zone’ in al-Mawasi as heavy fighting continues in Gaza.

Smoke has been spotted rising from southern Israel over Gaza’s skyline, with the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) conducting airstrikes in the north of the Strip. In addition to the ongoing conflict in the north, fighting also persists in Gaza’s southernmost city, Rafah, where Israel recently launched a ‘limited’ operation to cut off Hamas supply lines.

IDF spokesperson Daniel Hagari stated, “Since the start of our precise operation against Hamas in Rafah, we have eliminated dozens of terrorists, exposed underground terror tunnels, and seized vast amounts of weapons.” The IDF has urged civilians to move to humanitarian areas to avoid being caught in the crossfire.

The UN reports that approximately 150,000 Palestinians have already fled Rafah following last week’s evacuation orders, with many seeking refuge in al-Mawasi. However, concerns have been raised by aid groups about the conditions in the overcrowded humanitarian zone, where supplies of food, water, and healthcare are inadequate.

Despite declaring Rafah a safe zone and threatening a full-scale ground offensive, Israel has faced criticism from aid groups and global leaders, including the United States. President Joe Biden recently warned of halting weapon supplies to Israel if it proceeds with plans to invade the city. The situation remains tense as civilians continue to be caught in the crossfire of the conflict.
