If Trump is convicted in his hush money trial, what prison sentence could he face?

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Former President Donald Trump is facing the possibility of becoming the first American president in history to serve time in prison as the jury prepares to weigh his fate in the New York hush money trial. The trial revolves around 34 counts of falsifying business records to conceal a $130,000 payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 presidential campaign, allegedly to ensure her silence about an affair in 2006.

Despite denying the affair and pleading not guilty to all charges, Trump could face more than a decade in prison if convicted. The charges have been elevated to class E felonies, as prosecutors claim they were committed to conceal election conspiracy and campaign finance and tax law violations.

The trial has seen testimonies from key figures like Stormy Daniels, Michael Cohen, and former White House aides, with both sides now resting their cases. Closing arguments are scheduled for next week, followed by jury deliberations.

While New York state law imposes a maximum four-year prison sentence for a class E felony, Trump could potentially face up to 20 years due to the number of charges. However, given his lack of prior criminal record and the non-violent nature of the alleged crimes, it is unlikely that he would serve jail time. Instead, other penalties such as fines, probation, or conditional discharge may be imposed.

As Trump continues to campaign for the presidency in November, he is also facing criminal indictments in Florida, Washington DC, and Georgia. The outcome of the hush money trial in New York could have significant implications for his political future and legal battles.
