IIT Madras Boosts Indian Sports Industry with Artificial Intelligence – Tech News

Indian sports are embracing artificial intelligence (AI) and data analytics to enhance player performance across various disciplines. From cricket to chess, boxing to badminton, tennis to wrestling, almost all sports in India are taking baby strides in AI.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) may be out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) this season, but they have made a significant impact by actively incorporating AI and data analytics to improve player performance, thanks to technology developed by the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras).

The Faf Du Plessis-led side utilized AI technology from IIT Madras to analyze net bowlers and enhance their strategies. Not just cricket, but other sports tech startups in chess, boxing, badminton, tennis, and wrestling are also benefiting from the expertise of the premier institute.

ESPNcricinfo recently unveiled the ‘Player Impact Score’ based on a Sports Analytics Algorithm developed by IIT Madras. Fantasy league companies are also in talks with the institute for similar offerings.

The IIT Madras Centre of Excellence in Sports Science and Analytics (CESSA) has identified Kolkata Knight Riders all-rounder Sunil Narine as the most impactful player across all IPL editions. The institute plans to support around 30 sports tech startups annually, grooming nearly 200 startups over five years in areas like computer vision, data analytics, AI, ML, and biomechanics.

IIT Madras is working on enhancing player performance, analytics, education, and supporting sports tech startups. The institute’s AI engine, developed in collaboration with Gyan Data, provides nuanced analysis of limited-overs cricket, updating predictive data after every ball.

From boxing to football, sports in India are leveraging AI and analytics to improve performance and gain a competitive edge in the global arena. With IIT Madras at the forefront of this technological revolution, Indian sports are poised for a bright future powered by artificial intelligence.
