Rose Yeboah, a rising star in the world of track and field, made history for the Illinois women’s team at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon. The Ghanaian high jumper soared to victory on Saturday evening, sharing the national title with Georgia’s Elena Kulichenko after both athletes cleared an impressive height of 6 feet, 5 1/2 inches.
Yeboah’s remarkable leap not only set a new Illinois record but also established a new NCAA meet record, securing her a spot in the upcoming Summer Olympics in Paris. This achievement marks a significant milestone for the Illini program, as Yeboah becomes the first outdoor national champion for the team since Ashley Spencer’s victory in 2013.
In addition to Yeboah’s success, her teammate Dara Sopova also made waves at the championships by finishing second in the triple jump with a school-record leap of 45-11 3/4. Sopova, a junior from Latvia, showcased her talent and contributed to Illinois’ 16th place finish in the team standings.
The Illini had two more athletes finish in ninth place on Saturday, with Jessica McDowell impressing in the 400 meters and Bara Sajdokova excelling in the high jump. Overall, Yeboah’s triumph, along with the strong performances of her teammates, highlighted a memorable weekend for Illinois track and field.
