Illinois Football Players Prepare for NFL Draft

As the NFL draft approaches, all eyes are on Illinois defensive tackle Johnny Newton. With an impressive season under his belt, Newton is a strong contender to be drafted in the first round on Thursday night. Despite not being a top pick like some of his predecessors, Newton’s performance has caught the attention of NFL scouts and analysts.

In addition to Newton, several other former Illini players are also hoping to hear their names called during the draft. Offensive lineman Isaiah Adams, tight end Tip Reiman, wide receiver Isaiah Williams, defensive tackle Keith Randolph Jr., and offensive lineman Julian Pearl are all potential late-round picks. The Illinois football program, under the leadership of head coach Bret Bielema, has seen an increase in players being drafted in recent years, signaling a positive trend for the program.

While not every player will be drafted, there is still hope for those who go undrafted. Former Illini players Tommy DeVito and Justin Hardee serve as examples of players who signed undrafted free-agent contracts and went on to have successful NFL careers. DeVito started six games for the Giants last season, while Hardee is entering his eighth NFL season after stints with the Saints, Jets, and now the Browns.

As the draft unfolds, Illinois football fans will be eagerly watching to see where their former players end up and cheering them on as they begin their professional football careers.
