OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever has announced his departure from the company after almost a decade, leaving behind a legacy of groundbreaking artificial intelligence technology. Sutskever made the announcement on X, formerly Twitter, expressing his confidence in OpenAI’s ability to develop safe and beneficial artificial general intelligence (AGI).

Sutskever’s departure comes after a tumultuous period for OpenAI, which saw the removal and subsequent rehiring of chief executive Sam Altman. Despite not having his position on the board renewed, Sutskever remained in his role as chief scientist at OpenAI.

In his farewell message, Sutskever expressed gratitude for his time at OpenAI and his colleagues, stating that he will now focus on a personal project. Meanwhile, OpenAI has released a new and improved version of its artificial intelligence technology, GPT-4o, which promises to be even more human-like and versatile.

The competition in the AI space is heating up, with Google, Microsoft, Meta, and Anthropic all vying to become the dominant player in generative AI. Altman envisions a future where AI interactions are as seamless and advanced as those depicted in movies like “Her.”

As the race for AGI continues to intensify, Sutskever believes that digital brains will eventually surpass human cognition, with far-reaching implications for every aspect of life. The impact of AGI on society is poised to be transformative, ushering in a new era of technological advancement and innovation.
