Implementation of Artificial Intelligence Technology in South Lanarkshire Schools

South Lanarkshire schools are set to embrace the future with the introduction of artificial intelligence tools in education. Following an extensive engagement phase with stakeholders, teachers, and parents, generative AI tools will now be rolled out across the area.

Councillor Katy Loudon of Cambuslang East expressed excitement about the potential of AI in education, highlighting the positive impact it could have on students. Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence that can autonomously generate new and original content, including texts, images, music, videos, conversations, and computing code.

The council’s education department has been proactive in researching and implementing this technology, setting up a working group at Uddingston Grammar school to produce guidance for teachers and learners. A pilot program involving sixth-year students is currently underway to test the effectiveness of Generative AI in the classroom.

The use of AI in education is not without its challenges, with concerns around plagiarism being a common issue. However, Councillor Loudon hopes that the focus will shift towards the exciting opportunities AI can bring to students.

South Lanarkshire Education Resources will continue to work closely with all parties at local, regional, and national levels to ensure that guidance and support are provided as needed. The introduction of AI tools in schools marks a significant step towards embracing technology in education and preparing students for the future.
