Improved Endometriosis Evaluation Targeted in New Consensus Statement

A new expert consensus statement published by the Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound (SRU) aims to improve the evaluation of endometriosis, a common condition that often leads to significant diagnostic delays and various complications.

Endometriosis, characterized by the presence of endometrium-like tissue outside the uterus, affects a significant portion of women and is associated with symptoms such as chronic pelvic pain and infertility. Despite its prevalence, there is often a delay of over seven years in diagnosing the condition in the United States.

The consensus statement provides recommendations for enhancing routine pelvic ultrasounds to improve the detection of deep endometriosis, the most severe form of the condition. By incorporating additional maneuvers and imaging techniques, the panel of experts hopes to increase the sensitivity of ultrasound screening for endometriosis.

Dr. Scott W. Young, the first author of the statement and a diagnostic radiology consultant at the Mayo Clinic, emphasized the importance of increasing awareness, improving interpretation, and implementing simple yet effective techniques to enhance the detection of endometriosis during pelvic ultrasounds.

The panel of experts, consisting of professionals from various disciplines including radiology, gynecology, and surgery, conducted a comprehensive review to establish the recommendations. These include specific techniques such as transvaginal ultrasound of the posterior compartment and the uterine sliding sign maneuver to aid in the diagnosis of endometriosis.

Overall, the goal of the consensus statement is to streamline the diagnostic process for endometriosis, particularly in at-risk patients, and reduce the delay in providing appropriate treatment. Further validation studies will be needed to assess the effectiveness of these augmented pelvic ultrasound techniques in clinical practice.
