In 2023, Atlanta Airport reclaims title as world’s busiest airport

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport has once again reclaimed its title as the world’s busiest airport in 2023, handling more passengers and flights than any other airport in the world. This comes after a brief hiatus in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic when an airport in Guangzhou, China briefly surpassed ATL in passenger counts.

Despite the challenges of long lines, crowded concourses, and parking struggles that travelers often face at the bustling airport, Atlanta officials see this achievement as a source of pride. Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens emphasized that the title underscores the city’s economic vitality and global connectivity, solidifying its place on the world stage.

Delta Air Lines’ hub in Atlanta plays a significant role in driving the high volumes of passengers connecting through the airport, providing a wide range of flight options for local travelers and attracting companies and residents who require easy access to domestic and international travel.

To accommodate the growing demand for travel, Hartsfield-Jackson is currently undergoing a multi-billion dollar expansion, including extending the Plane Train tracks, widening concourses, and adding gates to meet the needs of passengers and airlines.

While ATL continues to lead in passenger counts, other airports like Dubai International Airport and Tokyo Haneda International Airport have seen significant growth in rankings for international passengers and cargo tonnage.
