Google’s Android platform, with its dominant market share of close to 70 per cent, has become a prime target for threat actors looking to exploit unsuspecting users. With over 3.6 billion Android phones in use worldwide, the platform’s popularity is undeniable, thanks in part to its superior User Interface customisation options.
However, the downside of this popularity is the increased risk of malware attacks. To combat this, Google has revealed that it blocked over 2.8 million malicious apps from entering the Play Store. Additionally, the company rejected nearly 200,000 app submissions and banned over 333,000 bad developer accounts.
Utilising advanced Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning technologies, Google has been able to swiftly identify and eliminate potential threats. In 2019, the tech giant formed the App Defence Alliance with leading cybersecurity firms to further bolster its security measures.
With major players like Microsoft and Meta on the steering committee, the App Defence Alliance has continued to grow, with recent additions including Oppo and OnePlus. Google has also announced new security initiatives for 2024, including the removal of apps that are not transparent about their privacy practices.
“Protecting users and developers on Google Play is paramount and ever-evolving. We’re constantly working on new ways to enhance security and protect the Android ecosystem,” Google stated in an official blog post.
