Newark Mourns the Loss of Local Sports Legend and Community Leader

The Newark community is mourning the loss of Michael “Mike” George Canavan, a beloved figure known for his contributions both on and off the basketball court. Canavan passed away on Monday, April 1, 2024, after a brief stay in hospice care.

Born on May 9, 1946, Canavan was a standout athlete from a young age. He graduated from Ursuline High School in 1964, where he made a name for himself as a star basketball player. Canavan’s impressive skills on the court earned him numerous accolades, including being the all-time leading scorer and a two-time First Team All-City Athlete.

In addition to his athletic achievements, Canavan was also known for his dedication to his community. He spent many years working as the human resources director for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and was a passionate supporter of local sports teams, including the Columbus Blue Jackets and The Ohio State Buckeyes.

Canavan’s passing is deeply felt by his family, including his daughter Tracy, son-in-law Frederick, and grandchildren Autumn and Jonathan. He is also survived by extended family members, friends, and neighbors who will miss his presence in their lives.

In accordance with his wishes, there will be no formal service for Canavan. Instead, his family has requested that memorial contributions be made to Ohio’s Hospice of Central Ohio or the Licking County Aging Partners in his honor.

The Newark community remembers Canavan not only for his athletic prowess but also for his kindness, generosity, and unwavering dedication to those around him. He will be greatly missed but his legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
