Inaugural ASEAN Tourist Guides Conference to be Hosted in Sarawak

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Sarawak Tourist Guides Association (SKTGA) has made a groundbreaking announcement that the 1st ASEAN Tourist Guides Conference will be held from 24–26 October 2024 at the Imperial Hotel Kuching, Sarawak. This conference aims to bring together tour guides from across the ASEAN region under the theme “Togetherness in Tour Guiding Excellence.”

One of the main challenges facing the tour-guiding industry is the rise of online travel services, which have made it easier for travelers to plan trips without the need for tour guides. As a result, tour guides are looking for ways to adapt to the digital transformation era and enhance the overall travel experience for tourists.

Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak, emphasized the importance of recognizing the invaluable contributions of tour guides in providing unique experiences, historical and cultural insights, and ensuring the safety and security of travelers.

Edwin Lim, Honorary Chairman of SKTGA, highlighted the need for tour guides to collaborate with stakeholders and adapt to changing consumer preferences to ensure the sustainability of the industry. The conference will also address challenges such as supporting younger guides and thriving during off-peak seasons.

With a target of 400 delegates, the 1st ASEAN Tourist Guides Conference is expected to generate RM3.3 million in total economic impact. Supported by various tourism bodies, the conference aims to unite tour guides in the region and transform the tourism landscape for the better. Registration fees start at RM380/USD 90 for tourist guides and RM500/USD 115 for non-tourist guides and the public, offering a comprehensive program including educational sessions, networking opportunities, and a familiarization tour.
