The Church of South India (CSI) Parish in Abu Dhabi celebrated a historic moment on Sunday, May 5, as they held their inaugural public service at their new facility. Emotions ran high as the church welcomed a congregation of 750 members, along with people of diverse faiths from the local community.
Reflecting on the journey that led to this momentous occasion, old timers recalled the humble beginnings of the CSI Parish back in April 1979. A dozen CSI members gathered for the first service at St Andrew’s Church on Corniche Road, marking the start of a long and fulfilling journey.
Abraham Ninan, a long-time CSI member, shared his memories of that first service, where only 13 CSI members and around 75-80 faithful from other denominations attended. It was a small but significant step towards what the church has become today.
Over the years, the CSI Parish grew and flourished, forming a choir group, Sunday School, and women’s fellowship. The church relocated to the Al Mushrif mainland area in 1984, and by 1990, they welcomed their first resident Vicar, Rev K G Thomson.
The current vicar of the Parish, Lalji M Philip, expressed his gratitude towards former vicars, members, and well-wishers for their efforts in realizing the dream of having their own building. The new facility was inaugurated on April 28, with a soft-opening ceremony led by Rt Rev Dr Malayil Sabu Koshy Cherian, the Bishop of Madhya Kerala Diocese of the CSI.
Bishop Cherian emphasized the church’s commitment to welcoming congregations from different Christian traditions and promoting inter-faith dialogue. The church aims to be a place of worship open to everyone, spreading the message of love, peace, and harmony.
The support and generosity of individuals like M A Yusuffali, Ashish Koshy, Susheela George, and Saji Thomas played a crucial role in making the new facility a reality. Their contributions, along with the dedication of the congregation, have culminated in the beautiful new church building.
As the congregation gathers at their own facility after 45 years, Biju John, a committee member, described the moment as emotional and significant. The church, built on 4.37 acres of land opposite the BAPS Hindu temple, is now open to visitors from all faiths seven days a week, with services for CSI followers held every weekend.
The journey of the CSI Parish in Abu Dhabi is a testament to faith, perseverance, and the power of community coming together to achieve a shared dream. The new church stands as a symbol of unity and inclusivity, welcoming all who seek solace and spiritual nourishment.
