The resurgence of measles outbreaks in the U.S. and abroad has health experts on high alert. With nearly double the number of cases compared to last year, the U.S. is facing a concerning trend. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 113 cases as of April 5, with seven outbreaks contributing to the majority of cases.
The 2019 measles epidemic was the worst in almost three decades, posing a threat to the country’s status of having eliminated measles. The disease, still common in many parts of the world, enters the U.S. through unvaccinated travelers, with most recent importations originating from the Middle East and Africa.
Measles, a highly contagious virus, spreads through respiratory droplets and contaminated surfaces, making it easy to transmit. The CDC highlighted the importance of vaccination, emphasizing the need for a high vaccination rate to prevent the spread of the virus.
Before the measles vaccine was available in 1963, millions of cases were reported annually, leading to hospitalizations, brain inflammation, and fatalities. The vaccine, known as the MMR vaccine, is safe and effective, requiring two doses for optimal protection.
Despite the effectiveness of the vaccine, national vaccination rates have seen a decline during the COVID-19 pandemic, with rates falling to 93% for kindergartners. Health officials stress the importance of maintaining high vaccination rates to prevent future outbreaks and protect public health.
