India Pushes for Security Council Reform, Calls for Inclusive Framework

India has taken a strong stance on Security Council reform, advocating for an inclusive framework that accurately reflects the current global landscape. During the 6th round of intergovernmental negotiations on Security Council reform, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ruchira Kamboj, emphasized the need for expansion in both permanent and non-permanent categories of membership.

Kamboj highlighted the importance of a Security Council that represents the geographical and developmental diversity of the United Nations today. She stressed the need for developing countries and regions like Africa, Latin America, and Asia to have a voice at the table. India’s position on Security Council reform is widely supported by the majority of member states, with 113 out of 122 countries expressing support for expansion in both categories of membership.

India’s quest for a permanent seat on the Security Council has gained momentum, with influential figures like Dennis Francis backing India’s bid. As a member of the G4 group of nations, India advocates for reform in the UNSC to better represent the interests of the developing world.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also made a strong case for India’s permanent membership in the UN Security Council, emphasizing that the Council cannot claim to speak for the world without India as a permanent member. India’s push for Security Council reform underscores its commitment to ensuring a more representative and effective global governance structure.
