Indian-American-Belgian Actor’s Film ‘Minimum’ to Kick Off UK Asian Film Festival in London

Indian-origin American-Belgian actor Rumana Molla’s directorial debut film, ‘Minimum’, is set to open the UK Asian Film Festival in London on May 2. The movie, starring veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah, is described as a poignant immigrant tale set in Belgium within the context of an Indian family. Alongside Shah and Molla, the film also features actors Namit Das, Saba Azad, and Geetanjali Kulkarni in key roles.

The UK Asian Film Festival, now in its 26th year, will showcase a diverse range of films and pay tribute to renowned Indian artists like Shabana Azmi. The festival’s theme, “Climate of Change”, aims to move away from past experiences and embrace transformation in the current political and economic landscape.

Founder and Director of UKAFF, Dr. Pushpinder Chowdhry, highlighted the festival’s focus on feminism, diversity, and empowering emerging British Asian talents. The event will feature workshops led by industry experts to empower aspiring filmmakers and promote diverse narratives.

The Closing Gala at the Kiln Theatre in London will honor playback singer Kavita Krishnamurthy and actress Karisma Kapoor for their contributions to the artistic scene and Hindi cinema. Additionally, the festival will celebrate fashion sustainability with designer Rina Dhaka and pay tribute to legendary singer Mohammed Rafi’s 100-year musical journey.

The festival will also host events celebrating the 50-year career of Shabana Azmi and showcase the UK premiere of Anshuman Jha’s directorial debut, ‘Lord Curzon Ki Haveli’. With a lineup of thought-provoking films and engaging events, the UK Asian Film Festival promises to be a platform for amplifying voices, igniting conversations, and fostering empathy in a time of uncertainty.
