An Indian-origin couple, Shoi Ghoshal and Debashis Chakrabarty, have shared their harrowing experience of surviving a knife attack at a shopping center in Sydney, Australia. The couple was at the Westfield shopping centre at Bondi Junction when the attack occurred.

Ghoshal recounted how they, along with 20 to 25 other people, hid in a backroom and used cardboard boxes to barricade themselves for protection. She described the experience as “beyond horrible” and expressed gratitude for their safety while sending thoughts to those who were affected by the attack.

The couple learned of the situation when people started mentioning a rampant stabbing incident. They made calls to the police, who instructed them to stay calm and wait for assistance. Eventually, they were evacuated through the emergency exit of the mall.

In the tragic attack, four women and one man lost their lives at the scene, while a fifth woman succumbed to her injuries in the hospital. Eight others are currently receiving treatment for their injuries in hospitals across Sydney.

The attacker, identified as 40-year-old Joel Cauchi, was shot dead by a police officer. Authorities revealed that Cauchi had mental health issues, and there is no evidence to suggest any specific motivation behind the attack.

The couple’s survival story serves as a reminder of the resilience and courage shown in the face of adversity. Their experience highlights the importance of staying calm and seeking help during emergencies.
