Two Indian student teams from New Delhi and Mumbai have made their mark on the international stage by winning awards from NASA for the Human Exploration Rover Challenge. The KIET Group of Institutions in Delhi-NCR clinched the award in the “Crash and Burn” category, while the Kanakia International School in Mumbai was honored with the “Rookie of the Year” award.

The prestigious annual competition, which celebrated its 30th anniversary this year, saw over 600 students from 72 teams around the world participating in the challenge. The Parish Episcopal School from Dallas, USA, secured the first place in the high school division, while the University of Alabama in Huntsville took home the college/university title.

The final event of the competition took place at the US Space and Rocket Centre in Huntsville, Alabama, near NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Centre. Teams from 42 colleges and universities, 30 high schools, and 13 countries, including India, were awarded points based on their performance in navigating an obstacle course, completing mission-specific tasks, and undergoing safety and design reviews with NASA engineers.

Vemitra Alexander, the HERC activity lead for NASA’s Office of STEM Engagement, highlighted the importance of the challenge in inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers. The HERC is part of NASA’s Artemis Student Challenges, aimed at encouraging students to pursue careers in STEM fields and play a role in future space missions, including crewed missions to other worlds.

The success of the Indian student teams at the Human Exploration Rover Challenge is a testament to their talent and dedication in the field of engineering and space exploration.
