Industry Minister suggests government may provide additional aid to Rapidus

Japan’s industry minister, Ken Saito, has announced the government’s willingness to consider providing additional aid to Rapidus, a company focused on mass-producing next-generation semiconductors. During a visit to the construction site of Rapidus’ factory in Chitose, Hokkaido, Saito expressed his satisfaction with the progress of the project and stated that the government would evaluate the need for extra assistance based on the circumstances.

Accompanied by Rapidus President Atsuyoshi Koike, Hokkaido Vice Governor Tsuyoshi Mitsuhashi, and Chitose Mayor Ryuichi Yokota, Saito emphasized the importance of addressing infrastructure development and other issues related to the plant’s launch in collaboration with local communities.

Rapidus aims to produce semiconductor chips with a circuit line width of 2 nanometers, crucial for cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence. The company plans to begin prototype production in April 2025 and commence mass production in 2027 at the Chitose Bibi World industrial park.

With a total investment of ¥7.3 billion from eight Japanese companies, including Kioxia, Sony Group, and Toyota Motor, Rapidus has received government aid of up to ¥920 billion to support its operations. Mayor Yokota highlighted the need for a new industrial park to attract companies from related industries due to limited factory space, seeking cooperation from the state in this endeavor.

The collaboration between the government, local authorities, and private enterprises like Rapidus underscores Japan’s commitment to advancing technological innovation and strengthening its semiconductor industry.
