Abi Chinchilla, a fifth-grade student at IPS, showcased her musical talents at the Harrison Center during a recent First Friday event. Despite her initial shyness, Abi confidently strummed her ukulele alongside her classmates, showcasing the skills she has honed through her participation in El Sistema Indianapolis.
El Sistema Indianapolis is a nonprofit organization that provides free music education to students who may not have access to such opportunities otherwise. Inspired by a global movement originating in Venezuela, El Sistema aims to make classical music education accessible to all children, regardless of their background or financial means.
Abi’s mother, Carmen Chinchilla, attests to the positive impact El Sistema has had on her daughter, noting that the program has helped Abi come out of her shell and gain confidence. Through learning to play the ukulele and performing in school concerts, Abi and her peers have not only developed musical skills but also built a sense of community and social growth.
The program’s executive director, Katie McDermitt Blandford, emphasizes the importance of providing accessible music education to students in Indianapolis. With plans to expand the program to more schools within IPS and host public concerts for students to showcase their talents, El Sistema Indianapolis is poised to continue making a positive impact on young musicians in the community.
Abi and her classmates have found a supportive and encouraging environment in El Sistema, where they can learn new songs, meet new people, and grow both musically and socially. As they continue their musical journey, they are excited about the opportunities that lie ahead and the chance to share their talents with a wider audience.
