Incarcerated Women at Mabel Bassett Correctional Center Transform Lives Through Exercise Program

MCLOUD, Okla. (KFOR) — In a groundbreaking initiative, dozens of incarcerated women at Mabel Bassett Correctional Center (MBCC) are reshaping their bodies, minds, and spirits through the Prison Health Initiative (PHI) program.

The program, which involves spending several days a week in the prison gym and classroom, focuses on improving nutrition, health maintenance, and overall lifestyle choices. According to gym manager Jared McCord, the women not only work out but also gain valuable knowledge in the classroom.

With a motto of “No challenge, no change,” the PHI program lasted for eight weeks, culminating in the graduation of the participants who are proud of their accomplishments. The women collectively shed around 80 pounds, with one inmate, Jemima Sanchez, losing an impressive 20 pounds.

Sanchez shared, “It helped me out a lot. When I started, I was 205 pounds. I’ve lost almost 20 pounds, and I can actually jog a whole mile now.”

The program has been a source of encouragement and inspiration for the inmates, including Jamie Whiteeagle, who expressed gratitude for the positive impact it has had on her life behind bars.

MBCC hopes that the success of the PHI program will inspire other facilities statewide to implement similar initiatives, creating a positive change for more inmates. The recent graduates will have the opportunity to participate in an advanced version of the program and serve as mentors for new students, fostering a sense of community and support within the prison walls.
