Intel has just teased its upcoming Lunar Lake client processors, set to power AI personal computers starting from the third quarter of 2024. This announcement comes just after Microsoft revealed its first set of Copilot+ PCs, powered by the Snapdragon X Elite/Plus processor.
With over 80 designs from more than 20 original equipment manufacturers, Intel is estimated to ship over 40 million artificial intelligence-powered PCs in 2024. Michelle Johnston Holthaus, Intel’s executive vice-president and general manager of the Client Computing Group, expressed excitement about the breakthrough power efficiency and compatibility of x86 architecture that Lunar Lake processors will offer.
These processors are said to provide three times more AI performance than the current Intel Core Ultra processors, with a dedicated neural processing unit capable of delivering 40 TOPS of performance. Additionally, the Xe2 graphic processing unit is expected to provide 60 TOPS of performance.
Intel has made significant strides in power efficiency with the Lunar Lake processors, which are expected to be far more efficient than their predecessors. It is speculated that these chips will have integrated memory similar to Apple Silicon, further enhancing their power efficiency.
The company is already running product wafers for Lunar Lake and plans to share more information at Computex 2024 in Taipei, Taiwan. CEO Patrick Gelsinger is set to deliver the keynote at the event, where more details about the highly anticipated Lunar Lake processors are expected to be revealed.
