Interlochen Arts Academy is abuzz with excitement as they gear up to host the largest and most complex performance in the school’s history. The world premiere of the modern opera “Edmonia” is set to take center stage, telling the inspiring story of 19th-century Black and Ojibwe sculptor Edmonia Lewis.

Commissioned by renowned novelist Toni Morrison and composed by the talented Dr. Bill Banfield, “Edmonia” is a two-act opera that celebrates the life and artistry of a remarkable woman who defied all odds. Dr. Banfield, a multi-talented musician and educator, is the driving force behind the production, bringing his wealth of experience and passion for creativity to the project.

With auditions kicking off in December and a cast of 65, including seasoned performers like Patrice Rushen and Broadway actor Sydney James Harcourt, the production promises to be a spectacular showcase of talent. The elaborate costumes, designed and created by a dedicated team led by Caitlin Eldred, add another layer of depth to the performance.

But the grandeur of “Edmonia” doesn’t stop there. The opera involves all seven arts divisions of the school and features cutting-edge technology, including a high-tech rotating stage that adds a magical element to the show. With a generous donation allowing for the purchase of this state-of-the-art scenery system, the production is set to dazzle audiences with its innovative design.

As the excitement builds for the May 3-5 performances, Interlochen Arts Academy is poised to deliver a truly unforgettable experience that celebrates the power of art, creativity, and storytelling. Don’t miss your chance to witness history in the making with “Edmonia” at Interlochen Arts Academy.
