Two Indianapolis Public Schools teachers were recently surprised with the prestigious Teacher of the Year award, and their reactions were nothing short of heartwarming. Ashley Hogan of Emma Donnan Elementary and Middle School and Linda Thomson of Shortridge High School were the recipients of this honor, selected by a committee of their peers.

Hogan, who teaches eighth-grade English language arts, was completely shocked when her students managed to keep the award a secret until the big reveal. She comes from a family of educators and draws inspiration from her own experiences with an Individualized Education Program (IEP) to empower her students. Hogan uses her fluency in Spanish and French to create a supportive and inclusive classroom environment for all her students.

Thomson, who teaches Spanish at Shortridge High School, always knew she wanted to be a teacher and is passionate about sharing her love of the language with others. Growing up in a bilingual household has influenced her work, as she strives to inspire her students to explore the world and pursue their passions.

Both teachers offered advice to students on how to spend their summer break, encouraging them to try new things, learn new skills, and enjoy the freedom that comes with the season. Their dedication to their students and commitment to excellence make them deserving recipients of the Teacher of the Year award.
