Interview with the Producers of Jumping for Change: A Bird’s Perspective

Reading Time: < 1 minute

African basketball film, “Jumping for Change,” is making waves not just for its sports content, but for its powerful message about societal norms and embracing change within the Maasai community in Kenya. The film, which won at the Films for Fans NBA Awards, explores the transformative power of sport within the rich tapestry of African culture.

In an exclusive interview with the film’s producers, Becky Muikia and Rahma Saif, African basketball presenter and correspondent Silalei Shani delved into the inspiration behind the project. Muikia shared that the idea stemmed from a Maasai cricket team that wore their traditional regalia while playing, sparking the concept of showcasing the Laikipia Basketball Ladies using basketball to combat harmful practices like Female Genital Mutilation within their community.

The producers intentionally kept the film visually engaging with minimal dialogue to transcend language barriers and deliver a universal message of empowerment. They highlighted the importance of gender inclusivity and women empowerment within the community, showcasing how men can be allies in breaking cultural stereotypes.

The authenticity of the film was further emphasized by casting real female basketball players, showcasing their skills and inspiring young African women to pursue their dreams through sports. The title, “Jumping for Change,” symbolizes taking a leap and daring to make a difference, reflecting the film’s underlying narrative of empowerment and impact.

Overall, “Jumping for Change” is not just a basketball film, but a powerful narrative of hope, continuity, and the lasting impact of positive influences within traditional settings. Muikia and Saif’s dedication to telling African stories by Africans shines through in this inspiring film that is making a difference in the community and beyond.
