Investigation into Matthew Perry’s death focuses on ketamine levels

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The death of “Friends” star Matthew Perry has sparked an investigation into the source of the ketamine that led to his tragic demise, authorities revealed on Tuesday.

Los Angeles police, in collaboration with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, are delving into how the 54-year-old actor obtained the supply of ketamine that ultimately claimed his life. Perry was discovered face down in his hot tub by an assistant on October 28, and despite immediate medical attention, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The autopsy report, released in December, indicated that the level of ketamine in Perry’s blood was consistent with that used for general anesthesia during surgery. While drowning and other medical issues were listed as contributing factors, ketamine was identified as the primary cause of death, ruling it as an accidental overdose with no foul play suspected.

Perry, who had a history of addiction struggles, was reportedly undergoing ketamine infusion therapy, a treatment gaining popularity for its benefits in addressing depression, anxiety, and pain. However, the medical examiner noted that the levels of ketamine in Perry’s system at the time of his death could not be solely attributed to his last treatment 1 1/2 weeks prior, as the drug is typically metabolized quickly.
