Investigation launched after engine cover falls off Boeing plane

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Airline regulators in the US have launched an investigation after a terrifying incident involving a Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-800. During take-off, an engine cowling detached from the aircraft and struck a wing flap, prompting the flight to return safely to Denver International Airport.

The flight, which was en route to Houston, had 135 passengers and six crew members on board. The plane ascended to approximately 10,300 feet before the crew made the decision to return to the airport. This incident has raised concerns about manufacturing and safety at Boeing, the aircraft manufacturer.

Southwest Airlines has assured that their maintenance teams will thoroughly inspect the Boeing 737-800 to determine the cause of the cowling detachment. The airline emphasized their commitment to prioritizing the safety of their customers and employees above all else.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that the aircraft involved was manufactured in 2015 and was equipped with CFM56 engines. Boeing, however, declined to comment on the incident and directed inquiries to Southwest Airlines for further information.

This incident comes on the heels of previous safety concerns with Boeing aircraft, including a mid-air blowout in January and the grounding of nearly 200 Boeing 737 Max 9 jets. Boeing has been working to rebuild its reputation following fatal crashes in 2018 and 2019 involving the 737 Max model. Passengers on the affected Southwest Airlines flight were accommodated on another plane to Houston, albeit with a three-hour delay.
