University of Iowa junior Payton Sandfort has made a big decision regarding his future in basketball. After initially declaring for the NBA Draft, the 6-foot-7 forward has decided to withdraw and return to Iowa City for his senior season with the Hawkeye men’s basketball program.

Sandfort, a native of Waukee, Iowa, had a standout season in 2023-24, averaging 16.4 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game. He also showcased his shooting prowess, with impressive percentages from the floor, beyond the arc, and at the free-throw line. His performance earned him third-team All-Big Ten honors and solidified his status as one of the top players in the conference.

One of the highlights of Sandfort’s season was a historic triple-double against Penn State, where he became the first player in Iowa program history to achieve this feat. His versatility and scoring ability made him a key player for the Hawkeyes throughout the season.

Head coach Fran McCaffery expressed his excitement about Sandfort’s decision to return for his senior year, noting the benefits of going through the NBA Draft process and gaining valuable feedback. With Sandfort back in the lineup, Iowa is poised to be a strong contender in the Big Ten Conference next season.

Fans of the Hawkeyes can look forward to seeing Sandfort lead the team and continue to make an impact on the court as he looks to fulfill his “unfinished business” in Iowa City.
