Iran announces arrest of senior ISIS member and accomplices

Iranian police have made a significant breakthrough in their fight against terrorism, with the arrest of a senior operative of the Islamic State group along with two other members who were allegedly planning a suicide attack during the upcoming celebrations marking the end of Ramadan.

The arrest of Mohammad Zaker, also known as “Ramesh”, and his accomplices took place in Karaj, west of Tehran, after a series of clashes, as reported by Iranian media. Additionally, eight others who were accompanying the suspects were also detained by the authorities.

Islamic State, known for its hostility towards Iran’s Shi’ite sect, had previously claimed responsibility for two explosions in the country in January that resulted in the deaths of nearly 100 people and left many others injured during a memorial event commemorating the assassination of top commander Qassem Soleimani in Iraq in 2020.

In response to these threats, Iran had arrested 35 individuals in January, including a commander of Islamic State’s Afghanistan-based branch ISIS-Khorasan, who were believed to be connected to the twin bombings in Kerman. Furthermore, US intelligence sources have linked ISIS-K to the attacks in Iran as well as a deadly shooting incident near Moscow in March.

The recent arrests highlight the ongoing threat posed by Islamic State and the importance of international cooperation in combating terrorism. With tensions running high, it is crucial for authorities to remain vigilant and take proactive measures to prevent further attacks.
