Iran reassures US it is not seeking to escalate tensions

Iran’s top diplomat, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, made a statement on Thursday assuring the United States that Iran is not seeking escalation after launching an unprecedented attack on Israel. The attack, which involved drones and missiles, was in retaliation for an air strike on Tehran’s consulate in Damascus on April 1, which Iran blamed on Israel.

Amir-Abdollahian, who is currently in New York to attend a U.N. Security Council meeting, emphasized that Iran has communicated with the United States both before and after the attack on Israel. He stated that Iran made it clear to the U.S. that the decision to respond to Israel’s actions was final and that Iran is not seeking to escalate tensions in the region.

Despite the attack causing little damage and only leaving a girl severely wounded, Iran has celebrated it as a success. However, President Ebrahim Raisi warned of a “fierce and severe response” to any further aggression by Israel.

The United States, as Israel’s top ally, has announced plans to impose new sanctions on Iran’s missile and drone program in response to the attack on Israel. The U.S. also expects its allies to take similar measures.

During his visit to New York, Amir-Abdollahian is scheduled to meet with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and other foreign counterparts. The U.S. and other allies assisted Israel in intercepting the Iranian strike, highlighting the complex dynamics at play in the region.
