Iranian Guards capture ship ‘linked’ to Israel in Gulf: official media

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards made headlines on Saturday after seizing a container ship “related to the Zionist regime (Israel) in the Gulf,” according to state media reports. The vessel, named ‘MCS Aries’, was captured by the Guards Navy Special Forces in a heliborne operation near the vital waterway of the Strait of Hormuz. The ship has now been directed towards Iran’s territorial waters.

This incident comes amidst escalating tensions in the region, with two maritime security agencies confirming the seizure of a vessel off the coast of the United Arab Emirates. The Royal Navy’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations agency reported the seizure without providing further details, while security firm Ambrey observed individuals fast-roping from a helicopter onto the container ship.

The Portuguese-flagged MSC Aries, the seized vessel, has been tracked in the Gulf by vessel tracking websites. The United States has responded to the situation by sending military reinforcements to the region, following Iran’s vow of retaliation for a deadly strike on its Damascus embassy in Syria.
