The tensions between Israel and Iran have reached a boiling point, with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launching a retaliatory attack on Israel. The IRGC claimed that the attack was in response to the Israeli assault on the Iranian embassy in Damascus, Syria.
The IRGC, a powerful force in Iran since the 1970s, sees itself as the defender of the Islamic Republic against all threats. In a statement, they said, “The Revolutionary Guard’s aerospace unit has attacked targets in Israel with dozens of drones and missiles in reaction to the Zionist regime’s crimes.”
The attack saw over 200 drones and missiles launched at Israel, with most intercepted before reaching Israeli airspace. The US and British air forces also joined in neutralizing the threats. While minor damage was reported at an Israeli military base, there were no Israeli fatalities.
In response to the attack, several regional countries have closed their airspaces and heightened their defenses. Western allies of Israel and the UN Secretary-General have condemned the Iranian aggression, while there is bipartisan support for Israel in the US.
Israeli officials have called for a UN Security Council meeting and have vowed significant retaliation. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu assured that Israel was prepared for any direct attack by Iran, with defensive systems deployed and ready.
The situation remains tense as the world watches to see how the conflict between Israel and Iran will unfold.
