Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi made a bold statement during his one-day visit to Sri Lanka on Wednesday, calling for Israel to be brought to justice for their “usurpation and oppression” of the Palestinian territories. Raisi emphasized that if Israel is not held accountable, it sets a dangerous precedent for other countries to do the same in different lands.

“When it comes to the oppressor, when it comes to the usurper, the Zionist Israeli regime has been committing oppression against the people of Palestine for 75 years, they have been usurping their territory,” Raisi declared.

During his visit, Raisi also inaugurated a hydropower and irrigation project in Sri Lanka, highlighting Iran’s technological capabilities and its ability to share knowledge with other countries. The project, known as the Uma Oya project, was constructed with Iranian technical assistance and will contribute significantly to Sri Lanka’s energy and agricultural sectors.

Raisi’s visit to Sri Lanka marks the first time an Iranian leader has visited the country since 2008, showcasing the strengthening ties between the two nations. The visit also saw the signing of five memoranda of understanding covering various areas such as tourism, science, media, films, and sports.

Prior to his visit to Sri Lanka, Raisi was in Pakistan, where both countries agreed to enhance economic and security cooperation. The visit to Sri Lanka and Pakistan demonstrates Iran’s commitment to fostering relationships with its regional neighbors and expanding its influence in the region.
