Iran’s Attack on Israel Raises Risk of Regional War in the Middle East

Iran launched a retaliatory attack against Israel on Saturday, risking a regional conflict involving U.S. military forces. Israeli officials reported over 300 missiles and drones were used in the attack, marking the first direct military assault by Iran on the Jewish state.

Despite the intensity of the assault, Israeli fighter jets intercepted 25 out of 30 cruise missiles, preventing any from entering the country. However, some of the 120 ballistic missiles caused slight damage to infrastructure at the Nevatim Air Force Base.

The attack resulted in a 10-year-old girl being severely injured, with 31 others treated for anxiety or injuries sustained while seeking shelter. U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin condemned the attack, stating that the U.S. military intercepted dozens of missiles and drones en route to Israel from various locations.

President Joe Biden reaffirmed the U.S.’s commitment to Israel’s security and announced plans to coordinate a diplomatic response with G7 leaders. The situation has escalated tensions in the region, with concerns about potential further conflict between Iran and Israel.

The attack was in response to Israel’s bombing of an Iranian diplomatic facility in Syria, which resulted in the deaths of Iranian military personnel. Iran warned of a more severe response if Israel makes another mistake, raising fears of a dangerous escalation in the already volatile region.
